Japanese election campaign begins with a huge rally in central Moscow on Sunday that is expected to draw a record-breaking turnout of more than 30 million – even though the turnout was just over 3% during the last Moscow Olympic Games in 2000.
With the largest turnout for the elections in modern Russian history, the Kremlin hopes the turnout will turn into "popular and significant election success" next time.
Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin also promised that the presidential election in Russia in June will be peaceful.
The first round of voting in the country's presidential elections began on June 7. According to preliminary results and unofficial results, Putin won by 13,334 votes to 13,971 for opposition candidate Alexei Navalny.
The final round, which is being followed by a recount, is set to happen by June 10.
More than 3,000 people, mostly students and activists, have been arrested and more than 1,000 people injured since Sunday's rally – including 12 police officers and several members of parliament – was held at a small police station just outside the Kremlin.
About 6,700 people have been detained for alleged "illegal activities" in connection with Sunday's rally and other public protests during the past three days.
